EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A US district judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist specific federal immigration rules. The judge stated the action was “a further instance” of linking government assistance to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to New Orleans prior to the new year, alongside an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation will consent to accept a limited number of migrants from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Additionally, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a broader belief in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy strategies.
