Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our security, highlights how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."

Last December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
