Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Officials reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of 1.4 million people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof surrounded by water in a low-lying neighbourhood,” an emergency official stated. “A father frantically contacted us, saying his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, officials announced two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service indicated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for the missing persons were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones more intense and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased doubled over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms result in an average of US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The Philippine president issued a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
