Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
